White House Pride Event Press Release

(Washington, DC) June 30, 2009 - Today, National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce® co-founders Justin Nelson and Chance Mitchell attended the first-of-its-kind lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Pride Month reception at the White House.  As a commemoration of the anniversary of Stonewall, the event celebrated achievements made throughout the past 40 years for the LGBT community.

The President reaffirmed his support of the Domestic Partners Benefits and Obligations Act, which will which will guarantee the full range of benefits, including health care, to LGBT couples and their children, as well as his support of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), the Matthew Shepard Act, and other issues now before Congress and the White House.

"The president said that he hopes to be judged not by words, not by the promises his administration has made, but by the promises his administration keeps. Rest assured that we will keep the pressure on the president to complete the equality agenda for LGBT people, our businesses, and our families," said Justin Nelson, NGLCC co-founder and President.

“We have been and continue to be encouraged by this President’s dedication to LGBT inclusion. We expect to see significant progress in the LGBT community’s movement for equality throughout President Obama’s term in office,” said Chance Mitchell, NGLCC co-founder and CEO.
