Ben Brooks, Founder of PILOT Inc.

At the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), our favorite thing is when our LGBTBEs are recognized for the amazing work they do and the contributions they make to the U.S. economy. Ben Brooks, Founder of PILOT Inc., has truly made us proud with recent recognitions for this excellent work.

Recently, PILOT Inc. won first place largest HRTech event in the world: HR Technology Conference Pitchfest. PILOT competed with over 100 companies at this event, and walked away victorious with a $25,000 cash prize!

PILOT Inc. was also recently named the #1 Workplace Technologies Startup to Watch in 2020. Brooks was Top 100 Influencer in HR & Technology by HR Executive Magazine, too!

These recognitions come as no surprise, as PILOT Inc. is an incredibly unique and effective business.

PILOT Inc. is a software-based employee coaching company, and aims to help businesses leverage modern technology. The company lets customers work on their technology growth when they want, where they want.  You can access the program on any device, even your mobile phone, at any time of the day hassle-free.

“This is uniquely important for diverse employees who sometimes have a number of lifestyle constraints that make in-office hours very focused on performance rather than personal development,” said Brooks.

The mission of PILOT Inc. is “for everyone to feel powerful at work,” Brooks said. He explained how understanding modern technology a key factor to a business’s success.

PILOT Inc. is also fast: the program deploys in just two weeks, and requires no complex IT actions. “We help busy business owners/leaders and HR experts be successful by doing the heavy lifting.”

The company has worked with many noteworthy business, including Pandora, MetLife, Cadillac, and many others.

PILOT Inc. was founded in 2014, and got certified just a month ago with the NGLCC. Brooks is already seeing the amazing benefits that come with being a certified LGBT owned business!

“We've gotten great feedback at pitch competitions that have hugely impacted the quality of our sales pitches to corporate customers. I've also learned a lot from fellow members and feel part of a special supportive community,” said Brooks.

NGLCC has also helped Brooks expand his network, and be exposed to several opportunities that he did not have before certification.

“We've been able to secure meetings at Fortune 1000 companies through the NGLCC network that frankly I don't think we would have landed had we not been part of NGLCC and LGBTBE certified. I think we are just starting to scratch the surface of what's possible in terms of value from this chamber,” Brooks said.

It is no question that Brooks is passionate about his business. His proudest achievement is helping businesses succeed every day.

“The real reward that makes me proud is when employees at each of these amazing firms ‘get it’ and find greater satisfaction in the jobs they already have!” he said.

When we asked about what advice Brooks would give to an LGBT person starting a business, he had great points to share.

“The LGBT community is large, we all know what it feels like to be different, most everyone wants to help fellow LGBT business owners, so ask for help! Show up to NGLCC events! And talk about your business with every LGBT person you know,” he said.

In the past, Brooks faced negative experiences for being openly gay in the workplace. After this, he was inspired to make work a better place for the LGBT community.

He co-founded the LGBTQ employee resource group at the Oliver Wyman consulting firm, and was a board member and chair of development for OutServe-SLDN, the legal services non-profit that provided free legal services to nearly 14 thousand impacted service members by the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy of the Department of Defense.

“So in many ways PILOT feels like my third act in LGBT activism. I get to create a company and a brand and a product that's inclusive, affirming, and considerate of everyone, which feels amazing!”

Congratulations to Ben Brooks and PILOT Inc. for the amazing wins and recognition in the past month. It is rewarding to see LGBTBEs succeed and accomplish so much!
