WASHINGTON, D.C.—Aug. 1, 2014—The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, the business voice of the LGBT community that represents thousands of local LGBT owned business across the U.S., strongly commends President Obama for signing the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order.
The executive order will require prospective federal contractors to disclose labor law violations and will give agencies more guidance on how to consider labor violations when awarding federal contracts.
“NGLCC understand that the vast majority of federal contractors play by the rules, yet every year tens of thousands of American workers find themselves in difficult situations because of abuses,” says Justin Nelson, co-founder and president, NGLCC. “This executive order embodies the values our community operates under every day and we appreciate the Administration taking this important step to ensuring everyone plays by the rules.”
The President’s action follows his signing of an executive order in July that banned LGBT discrimination by federal contractors.
While recognizing the importance of the President’s actions on these matters, NGLCC believes further action is needed to ensure businesses owned by LGBT people have equal access to federal procurement opportunities. NGLCC looks forward to working with the Obama administration to make this a reality and will continue to advocate aggressively for these businesses to have every opportunity to compete for federal contracts.
