The march for equality continues to gain ground, most recently that the City of San Antonio, Texas where the City Council passed a fully inclusive non-discrimination ordinance yesterday afternoon by a vote of 8 to 3. In the days and weeks leading up to this vote, the NGLCC was in close contact with our local affiliate chamber, the San Antonio Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and sent an open letter to the city council, which outlined the 1.2 million dollars in economic impact brought by our recent national conference to the neighboring City of Dallas.
Coupled with the hard work of the San Antonio GL Chamber, NGLCC added a valuable argument that economic equality was an essential part of any city that wanted to attract the best and brightest employees, companies and conferences to positively impact the lives of its residents. Missing out on millions of dollars is not in the best interest of the City of San Antonio, or in the countless other American cities that do not have local non-discrimination ordinances. Fully inclusive cities are not missing economic opportunities by choosing to exclude populations—and now, neither is San Antonio.
Team NGLCC is proud of the San Antonio GL Chamber, which was extremely engaged on the ground for this intense campaign. The chamber worked cooperatively with all of the local organizations and their President Ruby Resendez was instrumental in getting the support of many of the local chambers of commerce, including the influential local Hispanic chamber.
