The National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), the business voice of the LGBT community, is thrilled by the confirmation of Pete Buttigieg as the Secretary of Transportation of the United States. He is now the first openly-LGBTQ Cabinet Secretary confirmed by the U.S. Senate. This historic nomination further cements the Biden-Harris Administration as the most diverse and most pro-LGBTQ in American history— which were among the many reasons for NGLCC’s endorsement of their campaign in 2020.Secretary Buttigieg has demonstrated the kind of strength of character and visibility that helps elevate LGBTQ leaders across America. We fully agree with President Biden’s opinion of him:
“Mayor Pete Buttigieg is a patriot and a problem-solver who speaks to the best of who we are as a nation…This position stands at the nexus of so many of the interlocking challenges and opportunities ahead of us. Jobs, infrastructure, equity, and climate all come together at the DOT, the site of some of our most ambitious plans to build back better. I trust Mayor Pete to lead this work with focus, decency, and a bold vision — he will bring people together to get big things done.”
The NGLCC appreciates Senate Majority Leader Schumer and Minority Leader McConnell’s swift confirmation so America’s diverse business owners can get back to doing what they do best: powering the American economy, especially through the kinds of major infrastructure initiatives that Secretary Buttigieg will help lead. As the organization that represents the innovative suppliers this country will need to make these projects happen, we look forward to getting to work closely with Secretary Buttigieg and the entire Biden-Harris Administration.
