Washington, D.C. — The National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) proudly voices its support for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) Extension Act, urging Congress to take swift action to fund this critical program and address the imminent threat of 23 million households losing access to affordable internet.
In today’s digital age, reliable internet access is not merely a luxury but a fundamental necessity that empowers individuals to engage with the world and access essential resources. The ACP, established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) of 2021, has been a lifeline to ensure individuals and families can afford the broadband access they need for work, school, healthcare, and more.
The initial appropriation for the ACP is projected to be depleted by April 2024, placing millions of households at risk. The ACP Extension Act, introduced by a bipartisan and bicameral group of legislators, including seeks to allocate funds to sustain the program through the end of 2024.
Access to broadband is not just an economic issue but a critical equity issue, impacting business, education, healthcare, free expression, reproductive health, and the right to vote. The lack of affordable internet access disproportionately affects marginalized communities, including LGBTQIA+, Black, Hispanic, Indigenous, rural, and low-income consumers, among others.
As advocates for equality and inclusivity, the NGLCC calls on Congress to support the ACP Extension Act. The consequences of inaction are severe, potentially disenfranchising millions of Americans who rely on this vital service. This legislation is essential to bridge the digital divide, promote equity, and ensure that cost is not a barrier to accessing the internet for all.
