NGLCC Condemns Supreme Court's Decision Allowing Discrimination in Services

The National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) strongly condemns the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in favor of a Colorado web designer who refuses to provide services for same-sex weddings. The Court’s decision, with a 6-3 split, undermines the progress made in advancing LGBTQ+ rights and opens the door to potential discrimination against our community.

The Court has set a dangerous precedent. This ruling could embolden other business owners to discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals under the guise of religious freedom, potentially leading to a widespread erosion of the legal protections afforded to our community.

It is disheartening to see the Court prioritize the free speech rights of a creative professional over the fundamental principle of equal treatment under the law. The refusal to design websites for same-sex couples perpetuates harmful stereotypes and reinforces a message of exclusion and marginalization. No individual or business should be granted a license to discriminate against others based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Moreover, this decision has far-reaching implications. With 29 states currently having laws protecting LGBTQ+ rights in public accommodations, the Court’s ruling could undermine these vital protections and leave many members of our community vulnerable to discrimination. Even in the remaining 21 states without explicit protections, the decision sends a troubling signal that discrimination may be permissible under the guise of free speech.

NGLCC recognizes the importance of religious freedom, but it must not be used as a shield to justify discrimination. We believe in a society that respects and upholds the dignity and equality of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The Court’s ruling undermines these principles and threatens to roll back the progress we have made towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

As an organization committed to fostering economic opportunities for LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, NGLCC will continue to advocate for comprehensive nondiscrimination laws that protect our community from discrimination in all areas of public life, including businesses offering wedding services. We will work tirelessly with our allies, policymakers, and business leaders to ensure that no one faces discrimination or denial of services because of who they are or whom they love.

NGLCC calls on legislators at the state and federal levels to enact robust and inclusive nondiscrimination laws that leave no room for interpretation or exemption. We urge all Americans who value equality and fairness to join us in this fight and send a clear message that discrimination has no place in our society.
